Thinking Photographs: Towards a contemporary theory of photography.

SATURDAY MARCH 27
11 am – 6 pm
Auditoriet, Moderna museet, Stockholm

Already the name photography suggests a theory, a particular conception of image-making by the agency of light. From the inception of photography, the question “what is photography?” has consequently followed the evolution of the medium. What is that we do when we engage with photographs? What is the nature of the photographic image? Yet this question has taken on new inflections as a rapidly transforming image culture defines or characterizes 21st century human communication.

Contributions are invited to explore contemporary thinking about photographs, various renewed attempts towards a 21s theory of photographs, as well as reflections upon photographic thinking, i.e. the ways that photographs think or that photographs themselves are capable of theorizing. Contributions will be both in the form of lectures, talks, papers, as well as presentations of visual projects by artists/practitioners.
